From books to television to movies, science fiction has often explored what would happen if we could change history--either our own personal history or larger events.

Do you think history could be safely changed?

If you could change anything in the past, what would you change?

And have you read or seen anything interesting lately about changing the past?

So what are you reading?

I've read The Last Universe by William Sleator. It was pretty good. It was about the Quantum Theory which was really interesting.

William Sleater's a great one for taking an interesting idea, a "what if" and building a compelling story out of it. I really enjoyed his "Interstellar Pig" when I was younger.

I liked interstellar pig also. A book I've read recently is The Host by Stephenie Meyer, which was pretty good.

What did you like about The Host?

I liked how the Wanderer gained acceptance into the humans' life gradually, and the struggle between her and Melanie in the beginning. Overall the book was good, but the sci-fi aspect was kind of weak.

That's an interesting point. Sometimes we get science fiction really heavy on concepts, and sometimes we have science fiction that could just as easily have been told in our current world except that stars and aliens are painted in the background.

What kind of science fiction does everyone (and by everyone I mean you, oh reader) like?

I personally like sci-fi to be about a futuristic world or a deadly strain of a virus threatning humanity (and the race to find the cure for it).
Another topic I like is cloning humans.

For my part, I really like science fiction that challenges me to think. It can be thinking about scientific concepts or ethical quandries or whatever. But I like new ideas. I like having my assumptions turned on their ear.

What books have you read that had new ideas and made you think?
